Blue Nicotine's debut album 'Into The Blue' is a ten track collection of everything that makes the three-piece one of Glasgow's new exciting bands. The release of 'Into The Blue' came in October of last year and the album has everything from bright alt rock moments, to indie leaning tunes and even a song featuring the piano. Having previously supported the likes of False Heads, Collateral and Anchor Lane, Blue Nicotine have been steadily gaining listeners wherever they play. The project which was originally started by multi-instrumentalist Aidan Kelly has even previously sold out their hometown venue Audio. 'Into The Blue' is a largely contemporary feeling alt rock album yet it leans into some classical moments here and there. Opening the album is the largely popular 'Fading', this one is everything you can imagine from the fresh alt Scottish rock scene. There's a sort of emotive energy coming from it but the large chorus with it's bright guitars and melodic vocals take you on a more positive journey. Opening the album with such a strong track I was curious to see where Blue Nicotine would go next. 'Addicted' is a little rougher round the edges, dirtier and rockier feeling. It is very different from the opening track with it's darker energy. As the album moves on it gets even bolder and each track is even more different from the last, 'Alone Together' is dripping in rock n roll while still keeping that alt rock energy and big chorus's that Blue Nicotine seem to always deliver. 'Fairground' feels a little lighter and sing-a-long able, then sticking with that lighter tone 'Placebo Effect' comes in as probably my favourite on 'Into The Blue'. I was a huge fan of the guitars that build a sort of subtle intensity while the lyrics float over with an emotive melody. I mentioned the piano earlier and that comes on 'Silver Linings' which is more stripped back isolating the Scottish vocal with only the piano behind it. This one feels like a moment of reflection and as much as the whole album feels very emotion fueled none of the other tracks compare to 'Silver Linings' in that respect. Instantly jumping in an upbeat direction however 'Our Own Goodbyes' rolls in and this one is so much fun, giving the perfect contrast to the previous track 'Silver Linings'. I really loved the big catchy chorus in this one. 'Hello' and '1982' both seem to take on a kind of nostalgic personality in their own ways. '1982' especially being a stand out track for me with it's almost indie rock guitar melody, bluesy bass and rock vocal. This one kind of feels like hanging out in summer with your friends and it is going on my summer playlist immediately. Closing the album is 'Cinder', another great track with a brilliant chorus that begs to get stuck in your head. I love the way this one builds up into it's anthemic sound. If you're a fan of modern alt rock sounds then I highly suggest checking out 'Into The Blue', I'm personally upset it's taken me this long to find out about these guys. The album encompasses everything that makes their sound and I can tell that this is a band that have a bright future ahead of them.
