The Last King continue their heavy onslaught with their fourth full-length album 'Culling From Gods'. From New England, USA, The Last King are a technical deathcore band that draw influence from all areas of the metal genre. 'Culling From Gods' is definitely a heavy album, I personally am not normally a huge fan of deathcore stuff but The Last King have created something that I actually for the most part enjoyed. Opening the album 'Two Roads' builds the tension slowly before it just becomes this explosive track. It feels a little melodic and there was a couple of interesting guitar moments, I liked it but I wasn't a huge fan of it. The same can be said for 'Ancient Master' I did prefer this one and I feel like it took the energy up a notch but also not a favourite of mine. 'Plotting for Demise' is the first song on here that I can say I truly enjoyed. The third track feels a bit jaunty and as much as it sounds like a pretty standard opening riff for this kind of song, I really liked it. There's something kind of fun about 'Plotting for Demise', and the vocal talents are shown off here as well. I think in terms of the vocals this is potentially one of the strongest on the album, or at least you are given more opportunity to really take them in as there is a few solo vocal moments. 'Signs of the Goat' is one I don't have too much to say about, the vocals are again impressive here, showing off a more slowed down and drawn out sound. I kind of felt throughout this song that I was waiting for it to go somewhere though and it never really did. However, I do have to point out the drums which were great, and made the song for me. The title track 'Culling from Gods' is a standout track for me, this is up there as one of my favourites. It feels of a higher quality, the whole song is a metal onslaught that is packed full of musical talents. From the guitars that back the whole thing up, to the drums that crash through and the range of the vocals, this is a very well put together track and one I will definitely be listening to again. 'False Prophets' comes in hard and fast and from the get-go hits you with an attack that it'll never give you a second to recover from, and trust me this is a good thing. I couldn't do anything but headbang along, the guitars are powerful as the drums race and your ears are filled with the demonic harsh vocals. I think 'False Prophet' will be one that listeners will really enjoy. The last two songs 'Hypocrisy of Old' and 'From Here to Eternity' are two that I wasn't particularly blown away by. 'Hypocrisy of Old' fits in with the album and is much of the same, while 'From Here to Eternity' is kind of the same thing but an instrumental. Overall, I was actually quite impressed by 'Culling From Gods', as someone who's not necessarily a fan of the kind of music they make, I did enjoy most of it. There are songs on here that I will be listening to again, I'm more of a metalcore girl but I recommend checking this one out. I think The Last King are a band to watch out for, I heard a lot of potential within these songs and I believe these guys will continue to grow.
